On February 28, 2008 Illinois
Governor Blagojevich and Missouri
Governor Blunt announced the two
states have reached an agreement to
build a new, 4-lane bridge one mile
north of the Martin Luther King
Bridge. The two states are in the
process of securing concurrence from
the Federal Highway Administration
and anticipate approval this Spring.
The scope of work included in the
announcement is the first phase of
the project and represents an
operationally independent phase that
can be funded and built to function
as a viable transportation facility.
The map on this page depicts the
components as follows:
-
A new, 4-lane,
I-70 Mississippi River Bridge
with design accommodations for a
companion bridge to be built in
the future
-
A partial
interchange in Missouri with
existing I-70 near Cass Avenue
-
Improvements at
the I-55/64/70 Tri-Level
Interchange in East St. Louis to
accommodate ramp connections to
and from I-55/70
-
A roadway
connection between the existing
I-55/64/70 Interchange and the
new bridge along the I-64
Connector alignment
The Missouri North
I-70 interchange connects not only
to Interstate 70, but also to the
local street system via Cass Avenue.
The four-lane bridge will carry
two-way traffic initially. As
traffic demands increase, a
companion 4-lane structure can be
built, along with the I-44/55 ramps
to the south. The roadways in Illinois
connect the new river bridge with
the Tri-Level Interchange. The
Tri-Level interchange will be
modified to allow direct connections
to and from both I-64 and I-55/70 in
Illinois. Please see the
Funding
page for the cost estimate and
funding sources for the Proposed
Initial Phase.
