New Mississippi River Bridge ProjectNew Mississippi River Bridge Project

Re-Evaluation of the Main Span Bridge Structure

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Missouri Department of Transportation are making plans to improve the flow of traffic through the urban core of St. Louis and Southwestern Illinois. The plan calls for major upgrades to the highway network, centered around a new cable-stayed bridge across the Mississippi River just north of downtown St. Louis.

Proposed Bridge

The departments are currently conducting a re-evaluation of the 2001 Environmental Impact Statement. The study includes refining the design of the bridge, Illinois I-70 Roadways, and the Missouri I-70 North Interchange with the intent of reducing costs. The study's goal is to reduce the project's cost, increasing the chances of the project being funded and constructed in stages. The results of the re-evaluation study were presented at public involvement meetings on November 8, 9, and 10, 2005. The information presented at those meetings can be downloaded and viewed using PowerPoint from the November Public Meetings Presentation. The goal is to complete the study by early 2006.
