The cable stayed main span of the Mississippi River Bridge is just a portion of the entire river bridge project -- the main span "ends" where the longest cable attaches to the driving surface of the bridge.  The bridge approaches connects the roadway in Illinois and Missouri to the cable stayed bridge.  Overall, the project looks like this:

The Missouri Approach connects into existing Interstate 70 and Cass Avenue in St. Louis City.  The Illinois Approach crosses several railroads and will connect with the new I-70 connection in St. Clair County.
